Here you go, folks. This is what we listened to on the 08-23-04 Harmony in My Head broadcast. I hope you enjoyed it. We have a great show for next week so please tune in. Thanks. Henry

Rare Essence – Lock It: Off the Work the Walls CD. I don’t know if this CD got very far out of DC where the band is from. Rare has been around a long time. This is the only record of theirs I have and this is my favorite song off this album. I don’t know what else to suggest by them as I don’t know a great deal about them. I just sent off for a live album of theirs.

Johnny & the Hurricanes – Revile Rock: I heard Red River Rock on an instrumental album I got when I was 13 I think. Years ago I was in Germany and there was a pile of these Johnny and the Hurricanes best of CDs in a record store for a few bucks. All the songs are cool but this song has a great honking Johnny Paris sax solo that I liked immediately. I read that this song was in the top 40 for thirteen weeks in 1959. Can you imagine this getting airplay now? Hey!

The Fall – Blindness: Another track from their last Peel Session. I can’t wait for the rumored Fall Peel Sessions 6CD box that Sanctuary threaten to release next year. I like last week’s Fall Peel track Clasp Hands but I think this one’s even better. Another one of those bands where I want to do a two hour special. Here’s the Fall site: http://www.visi.com/fall/

Bad Brains - The Man Won't Annoy Ya:
This is from a live tape made at the legendary Madam’s Organ house located in the Adams Morgan district in Washington DC. This would be in 1979, probably around November or December. This was one of the band’s more reggae flavored songs but before they brought out several reggae songs, that was 1980. If you pick up the very cool Banned in DC photo book, you will see killer Bad Brains pictures at MO. So coo, no stage really, bands played in the living room. I had so many great nights in that place it’s not even funny. At the beginning of the track you can hear people yelling out “Jah!” and shit like that. That would be Ian, Geordie Teen Idles, myself and others in the front. Later on in the song, you can hear people chanting, “Hey, hey, hey.” Ian and I would get on each side of the band and provide stereo backing vocals without mic. the band was not all that into us giving them mild amounts of shit but it was fun. These were some great times in the early DC music scene.

Die Cheerleader – Pigskin Parade: This was the single off the Son of Dirt CD. If you ever see this one around, check it out, it’s a great album. I mixed this record and had a great time with it. I also co-directed the video, I don’t know if MTV gave it much attention. Too mad. Great song, great video.

Eddie Cochran – C’mon Everybody: I have a best of on this guy. He didn’t get a chance to do much, he died in 1960 at 21 years of age. He co-wrote Summertime Blues before he died. http://www.hotshotdigital.com/tribute/EddieCochran.html

The Afflicted - Hippy Punk:
I might be pushing it with this one but I’ve been wanting to play the Afflicted for some time. I have always wanted to know more about this one man band from England. There’s some Eps and some singles, long out of print and very pricey when you do find them. Most of them are in plain sleeves except for one single and one LP that came in pink and white striped bags. Bonk records was the Afflicted Man’s label. I asked John Esplen about the Afflicted Man and he dashed off some quick facts and I didn’t remember any of it. Does anyone know anything about this band?

The Puppies – Secret Agent Girl: From the Puppies USA album. A great rock album, very fun to listen to. The vocals are by your favorite Harmony in My Head guest, that battling top, the wonderful Heidi May. We played I’ll Kick Your Ass on a previous show, so here’s another song.

Firesign Theater - The TV Set #1: This is from the Dear Friends album. I don’t know anyone who listens to these guys but I think they’re amazing. This album and Don’t Crush that Dwarf and Hand me the Pliers are my two favorite of their records. They are way out there and you really have to listen to what they’re doing because they throw a lot at you but it’s great stuff and upon repeated listening, you can pick up new stuff. http://www.firesigntheatre.com/

Dee Dee King – Commotion in the Ocean: There’s not a bad song on this record! This will be our third visit to the Dee Dee King Standing in the Spotlight album.

Negative Trend - Meat House:
Little by little, we’re working our way through the mighty Negative Trend EP. Here’s another of the four cuts. Meat House. Another great one.

RL Nix – There’s Something Rotten in Denmark: I got a lot of letters about the other RL Nix sermon I played, The Black Diamond Express Train to Hell. This is another one. It was a toss-up between playing this track and The Dirty Dozen Pt. 2. I think we’ll get to that one at some point.

The Misfits – Where Eagles Dare: How cool is this song. Now that the box set came out, there’s a few different versions of this song out now. I remember buying this single many year ago. I think it cost me three bucks. One of the best bands ever.

Hemingway - Nobel Acceptance Speech: I got this one hour cassette of Hemingway talking a few years ago. I had never heard his voice before. It’s strange. He speaks like his writing reads. He won the Nobel in 1954. He shot himself in the head in 1961. Here’s a website to download more voice samples. http://town.hall.org/radio/HarperAudio/012494_harp_ITH.html. I have read a lot of Hemingway, not all of it.

WKYS Roll Call: I think I taped this off WKYS FM in DC in 1986. Pretty amazing. The hosts just put a beat on the radio and people call in and rap. It’s all live. If you don’t tape it, it’s gone. I think that’s so cool. I have a lot of radio stuff where I like how the host or DJ talks so I tape it. I’ll bring in some of the late great Jim Healy at some point.

Matt Payne - God Corrects It: You might remember Matt’s previous track from several shows ago, well, Matt sent in another CDR. This time it’s got music. I think this guy can really go. I can’t say I’ve heard anything like him. Here’s another track.

Enzymes - White Boys: The band who brought you Speedwash. This is another track from The Spanish Food Sessions. Never released. A great Washington DC band from the late 70’s-early 80’s.

Generation X – Rock On: Another great Generation X song that Chrysalis has not seen fit to issue on CD. This is off the Dancing with Myself 12”.

Blues Boy Rawlins - I Got a Woman Shining My Shoe:
Many years ago, I don’t know where I was, I saw this album. The cover sold me. It’s a guy, he looks damn near homeless, he’s sitting on a chair with a woman wearing a bad wig polishing his foot while he looks drunkenly at the camera. All the men in the picture look like they are very bad men. On the cover, it says, “Featuring the hit, I Got a Woman Shining My Shoe.” I figured you can’t lose on this one. I was right. This record is awesome. Dave Alvin of the Blasters was over at my place one day when I was playing this and he really dug it and somehow my roommate at the time was able to locate a copy for him. He’s the only other person I know who has this record. Anyone know anything about this guy?

Plasticland – Office Skills: This track is off the History in 3 Chords 2CD set. It’s a compilation of Milwaukee bands. I think this track sounds great. I looked them up and there’s a website for them, they have some CDs out. I have not heard them but I will investigate them for sure. http://my.execpc.com/C6/5C/dmullen/plasticland/

Thanks for listening.
